Project Background

The Great Hall of the People, located on the west of the Tiananmen Square and built on an E-shaped foundation, covers an area of 15 hectares. Its gross floor total area, reaching 1,718,000 M2, is larger than the total floor area of all the buildings in the Former Imperial Palace. With its eaves of green & yellow glazed tiles, tall pillars and neatly arrayed surrounding buildings, the hall looks magnificent and imposing, which, together with other buildings nearby, give a spectacular overall view of the Tiananmen Square. The Great Hall of the People, included in the 'Ten Major Buildings' built in Beijing in the 1950s, is a pioneering work in the history of Chinese architecture.

Besides, the Hall is an important venue, where political, diplomatic and social activities are held by the Party, the state and the people's organisations; where meetings of the National People's Congress (NPC) are convened; and where the NPC Standing Committee does its routine office work. Every year, representatives of the National People's Congress-the highest organ of state power-assemble here to discuss, and make decisions on state affairs, while the NPC Standing Committee has used this building as its office.
